Neurodiversity Workshop: Creating an Inclusive Classroom for Diverse Learners
GUS Germany GmbH
How can educators better support autistic and ADHD students in higher education? This insightful lecture provided a foundational understanding of autism and ADHD, focusing on the unique ways neurodivergent students perceive, process, and engage with their academic environments.
Ausgangslage und Ziel des Projektes/der Maßnahme
Neurodivergence is many times misunderstood and there continue to be misconceptions around how it looks and what kind of support students need. Around 10-20% of the population is neurodivergent, meaning a significant amount of our students at UE are likely neurodivergent and require certain support in order to not face barriers that could stifle their potential as students. Despute faculty being motivated to support all of their students, if they do not understand neurodivergency and which tools could be helpful to them they will not know how to offer this inclusive environment for students
Umsetzung
In collaboration with Technicker Krankasse we invited an expert on neurodiversity, namely attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. The facilitator is an autism therapist, consultant and advocate who is part of the neurodivergent community themselves. They gave a 2-hour educational and interactive workshop with a Q&A for UE staff.
Ergebnisse des Projektes/der Maßnahme
We had 25 UE lecturers join this workshop and learn more about neurodiversity and their classrooms. They learned and share best practices in order to learn how to better support their students and create a more inclusive classroom.
